“They didn’t find you?” Bridger asked.

“Son, I know my land better than some sonsabitch that showed up to burn it down. I stood less than a hundred yards from them and they had no idea I was there. If my rifle hadn’t been burnin up in my house I coulda laid his ass out right then and there. I watched him and his load of poppers come through looking for all of us.”

“Poppers?” Kate asked.

“Dead.” Zachary said. “A dozen or so. I watched him kick in the front door of the house and shove em inside. That couple I told you about was still in there. The woman was sick as a dog and her husband wouldn’t leave her. Olivia had done all she could, given her pretty near all the antibiotics we had, but it weren’t no use. She had broke her leg and the fever had set in. She couldn’t ride. Couldn’t walk. Couldn’t do nothing but lay there and die. We could hear her screaming all the way in the woods where we were.” Zachary said.
